...that the performing ensemble employs a double bass instead of a second cello for these works? The first giveaway is the pic on the back booklet cover with the guy holding the double bass (nyuk, nyuk). The second is the sound of the ensemble itself - you can clearly hear the underpinning by the bass. It's quite nice actually and I prefer it to two cellos competing with each other for king of the lows. The booklet notes that substituting a bass for one of the cellos was a common practice in the early 19th century. In any case this is pleasant music, well played and recorded. I look forward to my next listen in about 10 years (God willing). And what about the other 6 string quintets, the string quartets and the 4 symphonies...
