This was one of the first CD's I ever bought. The transfer to CD has always left me a bit sad because the vinyl was so much better.
Is there a remaster anywhere with better sound?
Follow Ups:
I cannot speak directly of the RVW/Marriner disc but I have a few original Argo vinyl discs, some CDs from the Decca ADRM digitisation programme and some more recent remasters of them.Although the remasters can (can) sound preferable to the ADRMs, if you like the "magic" of the vinyls this is not recaptured.
I was privileged to visit the Decca West Hapstead studios during the period of the ADRM releases. The engineeers were proud of these compared to the LPs as they represented a straight 1:1 transfer from the digitised master whereas the vinyl cut required the use of further EQ and thus was not a duplicate of the master recording. So. although havimg logic, this demonstrated that recording engineers are often not audiophiles and may have a different system of values.
Many Argos have recent remasterings on the Australian Decca "Eloquence" series if you can get these as imports.

Is it this one or is the one of Marriner's other RVH recordings?
That appears to contain the same recordings that are on the OP's disc (with additions). In particular note the original issue dates by Decca. So,yes I believe so.
For Vaughn Williams, there's none better.
Nor for Arnold Bax, as above the 5 CD set with the BBC.
Yes,agreed, Tod was great in RVW (and Elgar for that matter). But Sir Adrian Boult is probaly more of the benchmark. After all he collaborated with RVW on the first performances of his scores for decades and premiered many of the symphonies.

Yes, agree but i don't like the sound quality of his EMI recordings as much (also available as a complete set at Presto.) I have many in single issues. The Handley set just sounds better to me.
RVW Handley set? Do you mean the set of symphonies? Odd as these were recorded by ...EMI.
Mind you I am in the UK and have the UK issues of Boult. Perhaps the USA ones are different? I know that what are great EMI recordings issued here on vinyl were not so well regarded when remastered in the US and issued on Angal.
Yes, the box set. See the link in my first post on the subj. EMI but 15 to 20 years after the latest Boult versions of the early 70s. You're right about EMI recordings which were trashed by Angel when they were issured over here. Some of the worst pressings there were coming out in that era.
