All I can say is, when I saw the Buddy Rich Big Band (twice), I was definitely paying to hear Buddy. The band was just a backdrop to me.

and the (mostly) youngsters in the band fresh out of Berklee (or wherever), in their ill-fitting
outfits, anxiously struggling to find the right page in the book as BR started tapping out time,
playing their asses off and make it through the set in one piece really earned their pay.
Helluva gig, extension course and experience playing with that ugly egomaniac.

Well put, and that's exactly what I didn't like about it. Great drummer, though.
