He also had an exaggerated opinion of the quality of his big bands - they
simply practiced the "higher, faster, louder" method of play.
If you want to watch an interesting video, look up the drum battle between
Rich and Ed Shaughnessy that played out on the tonight show a few decades
back. Suffice to say, Rich did not "win".
And for very interesting recording, listen to the Tatum/Rich/Hampton
recording that Norman Granz made, in the Tatum group recordings. You can
feel the egos and testosterone flow thru the music.

That left-handed tom part was pretty special. But to Ed's defense, Buddy's job was to do multiple solos every night of the year.As for the quality of his band's playing, I saw him with a small ensemble in a small club years ago and he completely overpowered the sound of the group. You had to be there mainly to hear him because you could barely hear the other members, especially since he was set up front and center.

.., he is said to have said "Rich on sticks, Roach on brushes" and going by the music on "Rich vs. Roach" I'd tend to agree with him. To each guy, the consideration he deserves.

Rich may have had an exaggerated opinion of his ability as a band leader. When I heard him, I thought his band was too much about his own solos. Somewhere in one of his tirades, he says something along the lines of "the people are paying to hear me play, not you". But imo that says as much about his ability as a band leader as it does about his ability as a drummer, his ego, or anything else.
All I can say is, when I saw the Buddy Rich Big Band (twice), I was definitely paying to hear Buddy. The band was just a backdrop to me.

Helluva gig, extension course and experience playing with that ugly egomaniac.
The two times I saw HIM and them was just tremendous.

Well put, and that's exactly what I didn't like about it. Great drummer, though.
