Yeah, I've never understood how heated folks can get over the spelling, although I do feel that we should go by the way he spelled it himself.
BTW, it IS a countertenor who sings the Vocalise on this recording:
One last thing: one of my very favorite recordings of the Rachmaninoff Second Symphony would be the Sanderling/Philharmonia on Teldec (or whatever cheap reissue label it's on now) - if only he didn't take that horrible cut in the last movement! That key change is absolutely wrenching!

And it is the original, uncut version he wrote.
I like a lot of what he's done. BTW, as you may already know, almost every recording that's been issued for the last 20-30 years has been uncut - which makes that cut in the Sanderling recording all the more annoying.
