Federick Fennell at rehearsal with the Navy band.
Think a current orchestra would tolerate his kind of rehearsal?
I was fortunate in that he conducted our state select band. He was even more animated and definitely more particular...but I must admit I learned a lot from him: about music and the pieces we played
Follow Ups:
Any orchestra would enjoy this kind of rehearsal.
This is what it takes to get Percy Grainger's music correct. Percy Grainger's music is some of the most diffucult I have ever played, because his tempo and constantly changing (and odd) time signatures.
I played a concert with him and thought he was fantastic, though slightly bonkers.
I think any orchestra would love this kind of rehearsal. He knows what he wants, and gets it across. He is both focused and consistent. The measure-by-measure work is what's needed with a piece like this, which is not obvious at all (ref their first run-through.) The acid test is whether he got what he wanted in the rehearsal time allowed. I suspect he did.
Yes, it picky, but a good performance requires it. Even with something as "lowly" as a pop song, getting it just right takes lots of time and work. We recently did a day recording pop songs from the 60's with great musicians, and we got five songs recorded in ten hours, which is almost a record.
Music isn't easy.

I know many pro's who would feel insulted the way Fennell conducts.....
Let Celibidache be damned! :P
