Very nice summary, John, wish that I had been there. I have seen Dutoit conduct the SFS 4 times in works like Don Quixote, the Shostakovich 10th, Berlioz Damnation of Faust, and yes, the Planets. In my view he always gives a superb performance, and I believe if anything he is underrated. I would really love to see the SFS make him principal guest conductor and even make a few recordings with him.
So how is the Suisse Romande playing these days? Any remnants of the Ansermet days or have they become an "international" orchestra?
Follow Ups:
Charles Dutoit is in my all time top ten conductors, he always brings the goods, whenever I experience him.
Thank for reading, (Rblaw too).
The orchestra looked pretty young and diverse, much like Fischer's Budapest. They didn't sound like the old orchestra, based upon record listening. Brass much more rounded and the SR strings--while gorgeous in places--didn't have that wonderfully glassy quality of Ansermet's orchestra. OTOH, the oboist threw and unusually twangy sound when providing tuning note.
Yes, it's going to be sad to see Dutoit age out of the picture. Such an enthusiastic guy! Oh, FWIW, his hair is shoulder-length and pretty dark. Natural, I'm sure. : )
I was taken aback by your comment about his age, so I looked it up - he is 78. Blomstedt is still going strong at 87 so hopefully Charles will still be with us a few more years. Shame that his recorded legacy is marred by digititus. He seemed to do most of his recording in the 80s, when recording techniques hit rock bottom.
