In my 35 or so years in this hobby of ours I have found that Scandinavian record labels like Proprius, Bis, and ODIN are generally reliable for excellent sound. Not just sound but believable settings, too. They pretty consistently minimumly mike and at a distance that captures the room sound as well for that you-are-there experience. I have a couple records made by Mark Levinson that do this equally well. Harmonia Mundi is very dependable label, too, ime, tho with less emphasis on transporting you to the recording venue.
I read or heard somewhere that digital doesn't record the air and space surrounding the players or of a venue in a recording like analog does. Anybody know anything about that?
They still sound good to me nevertheless.
In regard to your last paragraph, I'd think that that would be more a function of how something was miked than whether it was digital or analogue. In any case, I know of plenty of digital recordings with lots of air and space surrounding the players.
