unbelievable, I've never heard such artistry, Horowitz included.
But though the bravura and sheer musicianship is ineluctable, the interpretation beyond a facile way with any difficulty is lacking. It isn't the lack of finesse or the inability to play piano or forte when called for or inappropriate phrasing or confusing of tempi or anything easy to point to--- it's just the feeling, when he's done, that that's it. No deeper emotion remains except, often, a wonder at the wizardry.
That may be the hardest hurdle for those possessing consummate skill; to not polish too brightly.
I know a lot of folks here like to point out how much finer this generation's artists have become. Myself, I love listening to recordings of Schnabel or the Swiss Edwin Fischer.
I have the excellent 5-CD Richter in Concert box from Brilliant Classics that was easy and cheap to get (around $20), and includes nine Beethoven piano sonatas, including the final three. (OK, it's $30 used and $104 new from amazon.com right now, guess it went oop, but I'm sure it could be found for less.)
These are live Moscow performances from 1961-1978.
I feel Richter's playing deteriorated a bit once we got into the 70's though.
