Thank You! Pat D.

I've been a player of all sorts all my life. For 14 years I was a classical guitarist. I've collected recordings the entire time. I'm a bit frustrated at the apparent ignorance of most folks on the subject. I was never a world class player, which meant I was limited to performing at various classical guitar societies. The ONLY paying gig I ever had was at a Mexican food eatery. By the way.....I only played the music of J S Bach. People are idiots.
Lesson one: What are you really after......Paco Pena is a Flamenco player, which is both Spanish as well as folk music....he is NOT a classical musician. South American classical composers are not to be lumped together with the likes of Charlie Byrd Bosa Nova music. Villa Lobos, Barrios, Lauro, and Brouwer are latin American classical composers.
The older giants after the likes of Segovia and Llobet were followed by Williams, Bream, Russell, the Assad Brothers, etc etc. Checkout the Naxos series covering the entire catalogue of Fernando Sor and Mario Guilianni. Guitar Solo on the GSP label will give you huge group of younger players to choose from.
Sorry for being prickly about the whole thing. It's what I had to put up with while attempting to turn people onto some incredibly profound music.
Tom B.
Excellent Tom B. Anyone else?
Three I especially like are:
John Williams later Barrios CD
Julian Bream playing Villa Lobos
Sharon Isbin "Jungles of the Amazon"
Harry
Thank You! Harry.
Sure. I hope that you like them.
Harry
I like both of these guys' recordings.
Eliot Fisk does some nice straightforward classical.
Paco Pena is just plain outstanding.
Thank You! guys.
keep the info flowing...
Naxos has a whole series devoted to classical guitarists you probably
have never heard of. Some of these folks are VERY good, and the discs
are usually inexpensive. Recording quality in my experience is very good.
"Mambo #5."
Luis Bonfa and many other Brazilian guitar masters are well worth your time, too.
Not an expert, but one album I return to is José Luis Montón's "Solo Guitarra" on ECM. The opening piece "Rota" is on the video below.
Another favorite is Gustavo Santaolalla's "Ronroco". In addition to guitar he plays a number of other stringed instruments. You may recognize some of the pieces having been used in the soundtracks of various films. Complete album on video below.

All excellent suggestions guys. For those who have not read the October 2014 issue of Stereophile, John Marks (JM), mentions some wonderful guitar selections from various classical/spanish backgrounds.
Sergio and Odair Assad are masters. They've made a bunch of albums. My favorites are:
-- Latin American Music for Two Guitars
-- Saga Dos Migrantes
-- Alma Brasiliera
They've also done some very good albums of all classical music and tango, especially Piazzolla. If you ever have a chance to see them in concert ......
Egberto Gismonti "Danca das Cabecas" -- Part I is just Gismonti on 8-string guitar and Nana Vasconcelos accompanying with percussion (Nana later played with Pat Metheny Group) Just hearing the album for the first time, I would have thought it involved overdubbing and many tracks. But thing is, I actually saw them perform this in concert when the album was being released, and was so blown away, I went shopping the next day. This may be the single greatest solo performance on guitar I've ever witnessed, made that much more amazing by the work of Vasconcelos.
Gismonti has released many other albums, and he's written some really great music. But he performs as much or more on piano than guitar, despite his remarkable talent.
Here is his beautiful and deeply touching piece called "Agua e Vinho" which (to my knowledge) he only ever recorded on piano, but here arranged and performed by Sergio and Odair Assad (although the photo is Gismonti).
"Life without music is a mistake" (Nietzsche)
'S gotta be Sepultura!
