I don't know why conductor Jahja Ling never rose to prominence.... He only did the best Tchaikovsky Four I've ever experienced, and also did a great Mussorgsky/Ravel "Pictures"....
Follow Ups:
???!! Ling is one of the most prominent conductors in the US right now, and for the past couple of decades!! I can only assume that you mean he hasn't made many recordings, which is certainly true - but only a handful of orchestras record on a regular basis anymore, which means only a handful of conductors, too. Most recordings orchestras make nowadays are limited pressing, local-only releases, usually self-produced. But Ling is easily one of the busiest conductors in the country! And as others have mentioned, he has done great work with the San Diego Symphony, which is his main gig at the moment.
I don't think there is going to be another Leonard Bernstein...... At least in regard to familiarity to the masses.
something to do with his heritage, I hope not?
We actually are friends and congregation members now with several of his friends in So Cal. I used to sit next to his mother at the Cleveland Chinese Church where I personally began my journey as a follower of Jesus Christ. Jahja and the family were members there.
Haven't heard the San Diego orch, have you?
"Haven't heard the San Diego orch, have you?"
No I haven't....
Don't travel to California much nowadays.... Just can't afford it.
They Love him.
"They Love him."
They loved him in Cleveland too.
He was here in SF too, I just remembered!
Always heard good things about him.
Can't say that very often.
