but your post has me looking on Amazon for her music. I was taken by this album cover.

Very ironic you mention that album. I was listening to that exact album when I made this post. This album was done with Miles Davis. Unfortunately she passed away in 2004. I've been a fan or her work for a few years now. It's a great album to start with. I decided to start sharing music I listen to here on the asylum. Been way to quiet about what I listen to.
I am a big fan. She has a unique quality to her voice. I am also a big abbey Lincoln fan. Start with That's Him!
i first heard this tune on the way to work in the dark at about 0615 one morning. at first. i heard this trumpet and thought 'ooh, a new miles album', but then she came on singing the words "you won't forget me" in that sultry, slow tone that went to my spine!
i knew then that i HAD to get that album. that was t beginning of a love affair with her music that had me mesmerized for a very long time. her ability to sing so slowly and yet swing is unmatched, all while playing piano as well! captivating.
then on another morning on the way to work driving down the 2 freeway towards big county LA hospital, i hear a tune that i just could not sit still to that turned out to be abbey lincoln singing "the music is the magic" from the album "devil's got your tongue", the beginning of yet another love affair with a female singer. i just defy you to sit still during that tune.
it's funny that we would both be taken by the same two ladies.

Indeed!

That is a jewel of a recording session. The choice and the sequencing of the tunes is near perfect. I spent a summer listening to that LP almost every day. The sound is great. Another terrific sounding LP is Johnny Griffin's The Little Giant. Such a HUGE sound from a small group.
