I hear ya, but sometimes I think we expect a bit too much from today's classical music review sites/magazines. I don't accept any of them as anywhere near authoritative, but I'm glad and more than a little surprised there are any left out there at all. At least they call your attention to some of what's available.
As for your comment about "caustic" reviews in Fanfare, no doubt you're right, but in the past others have slammed them for shilling for labels that give them advertising revenue and not writing negative reviews. I just see it all as informational and don't worry too much about some over the top invective.
Of course you're right. I use them mostly for informational purposes as well and maybe Fanfare has changed its tune(!) but what I read was overly nasty and I have little patience with the denigration of serious artists who have spent their lives trying to do the best they can, especially coming from someone who may or may not even play an instrument.
