It seems to happen that a piece is somewhat neglected, then, as Boris Goldovsky would delight in saying, it gets "glected."
Not my favorite Bartok, I must confess.
But, Western Civ. was headed for a real crackup back then, and the artists knew it.
NB, the photo is from the Opening Night Gala. There aren't any press photos up of the Oct. 3 concert. Which I heard over the internet.

I feel I've seen it a fourth time too, but I'm not remembering the details. Anyway, I've never had the impression that it was neglected - I've never seen the actual ballet however and would love to do so.
Ormandy, very late in his career, recorded it for EMI. Sadly, there's very little of the conductor's work that remains in my collection, so I'm glad to have this prized reminder. At one time, I bought lp's just because his name graced the cover.
No one gets the low bass drum, gong and trombone farts which precede the "Chase" like Ormandy and the EMI team.
There's no doubt about it, Ormandy's on fire here, as are his Philadelphians. I've never found a more vivid and/or colorful performance. Surprising though. In retrospect, my trusted, name-brand conductor of the 60's/70's IMHO turned out to be a pretty tepid interpreter of most war-horses.
If so, I'll give it a listen.

Got it covered!
