As you know, I'm not a big Gustavo Dudamel fan..... But I just heard his opening movement to Beethoven's 4th Symphony..... Conducting the Berlin Philharmonic..... One of the best I've heard.....
The internet radio station didn't play the subsequent three movements..... Maybe I should dive into this one.
Follow Ups:
Maybe the music is closer to his heart (and mine) but the SB rendition of Danzon No 2 is one for the books. Check the YouTube of the proms from a few years back. I saw him playing that program in San Francisco about the sme time as the proms video, also with the SB.
It had energy, youth, and eye candy. Oh those Venezuelans are sure pretty. The recording of the Firebird is also one of my favors.

Rare undoctored video of the Simon Bolivar Youth Orchestra..... It was uploaded by the conductor of the performance.
The Simon Bolivar (youth) Orchestra is really an amazing orchestra. The sum is much greater than the parts. Unlike most if not all other world class orchestras, the Simon Bolivar build from the ground up within their program. Almost none of the individuals in the orchestra would ever make it onto any of the other internationally acclaimed orchestras. It is a truly national orchestra from a country with virtually no historical tradition of classical music.
That's what I said, young and energetic with beautiful appearance.
I checked Amazon, there is no commercial CD release of the B-4 with Dudamel and the Berlin Philharmonic.... It can only be taken in via the Berliner Philharmoniker "Digital Concert Hall".....
There is a snippet of that opening movement from the B-4, it sounded like the same performance (link).
My only gripe with the DCH service is that you cannot legally store the performance for later use..... Or listen to it away from a wired computer. You have to be subscribed and listen within the subscription period..... I guess I'd use it if I knew I'd listen to other performances. (There are other performances I would listen to. But I guess I'm cheap, because of the free alternatives on YouTube. Albeit less video resolution.)
will be at Disney Hall, 10.10 for the Beethoven PC 5 and Choral Fantasy. LAPhil and Dude.
as I posted earlier, I heard him conduct the Tchaikovsky 3rd and 4th in Disney Hall...sitting in the section behind the orchestra.
With my bad eyes and pretty experienced ears, I can report that the Simon B orchestra played very well. He had a rapport with his orchestra and there were lotsa babes with black evening attire and some cool looking guys. Young, energetic. Dude's orch often doubled and tripled parts, making the sound bigger and more impressive. Particularly great was the start of the T 4, with the cymbals and huge orchestra. I felt a bit uncomfortable with this technique of putting over 120 musicians on stage (like 8 basses).
I missed his debut with the SF Symphony a few years ago but the wife got a cheap ticket to the 'open' dress rehearsal. Kosman's glowing review is linked below.
The wife was was impressed!
of balancing The Firebird, made a Big Difference, I heard.
So Stravinsky wasn't big on the Saxophone? Too bad! :-)
"Why didn't Stravinsky include the saxophone in the "Ragtime" section of his 'L'Histoire du Soldat'?" Stravinsky's alleged response when fellow composer Ingolf Dahl told him in 1949 that he was writing a saxophone concerto seems to bear this out: "Oh, that's nice. But the saxophone has always reminded me of a slimy, pink worm."

But would be interesting to hear your take on what make a 'great' conductor vs. a merely 'good' one.
Always assumed it had something to do with rapport and ability to communicate with the members of the orchestra, but WTF do I know?
Why do I like Herbert Blomstedt as a guest conductor far more than when he was actually here all the time?
Perhaps the SFS is a better orchestra now? Blomstedt a better conductor?
Familiarity breeds contempt?
