"You weren't afraid of being born--why would you be afraid of dying?" Alan Watts
Follow Ups:
L'Oiseaux-Lyre has just released a 50-CD boxed set that is one of my Holiday Gift Guide December-issue Stereophile recommendations.
30 of the 50 CDs are his, and they are so organic and lovely, and such a reminder of one's idealistic Baroque-Renaissance aspirations.
I am sniffling as I type this.
Eternal rest, grant him, O Lord.
I can hardly see...

That's how I hear him, too.
I've always wondered why Hogwoods's name is not mentioned more often. As for L' Oiseaux-Lyre, it has always been one of my favorite classical labels.
I only recently discovered his work on L' Oiseaux-Lyre through my love of Emma Kirkby and immediately began to collect all I could of the Florilegium Series and beyond. The Vivaldi Gloria and Nulla, Mozart's Exsultate and Handel Messiah, in particular are a delight to listen to.

What a coincidence! I had just put on my L'Oiseaux Lyre/Hogwood CD entitled "J.S. Bach, "Coffee & Peasant Cantatas" before I read your post. What a great sounding disc. I am reminded once again of how perfect Kirkby's voice is (or was) for this music.
As might be expected, I don't own any Hogwood CD's, but I do have on my shelves his very thorough study/biography of Handel, which I consult from time to time. In any case, RIP.

he just can't handle HIP.

I've got lots of Handel: the Beecham/Goosens Messiah, the Karl Richter Messiah, the Mackerras Mozart-adorned Messiah, Dorati's Harty-adorned Water Music and Royal Fireworks, Skrowaczewski's unadorned Water Music and Royal Fireworks, the keyboard suites with Richter, Gavrilov, and Heidsieck. . . ;-)

I looked at the discography on his website - I hadn't any idea that he had made so many (including a set of Beethoven symphonies.....).
I have little of his legacy in my collection. Some of the Mozart symphonies. I saw him perform just once - a performance of Messiah, which (hate to say this) I found uninspired.
What do you Hogwood mavens find to be his finest recordings?
I have Hogwood's Mozart Symphony Cycle, Mozart Requiuem, Mozart Wind Music, Mozart's Exultate Jubilate, several of Mozart's lesser known Masses and Marches, several of Mozart's Piano Concerti, Mozart's La Clemenz de Tito, 2/3 of the Hadyn Symphony Cycle, the Hadyn Cello Concerti, a few of the Hadyn Masses, Bach's Brandenburg Concerti, Violin Concerti, and Orchestral Suites, Handel's Messiah, the Beethoven Symphony Cycle, several Purcell recordings, Monteverdi, Vivaldi and other recordings that I can't think of right now.
They are all revelatory.
Messiah. It may be better than the performance you attended. :-)
His Mozart Symphonies are also very good in general in a HIP kind of manner.

I actually started a consultancy business. I had written most of the new rule books for mfd imports to Australia.

I have quite a few of his recordings and consider him one of the lights of early music and historically informed performance practices.
Sadly, down here in Texas, I only got to see him perform once, in 1975 as part of the Early Music Consort of London with the tragic David Munrow.
A great musician.

One of my favorites -
He will be missed
Christopher Hogwood was never knighted. He was appointed CBE.
Very sorry to learn of his passing. One of the pillars of of the early days of the authentic instrument movement and the "guide" to many of my formative experiences of 17th/18th century music.
He was one of the pioneers of the period instrument movement. "Authentic" was an anathema to Hogwood; in fact, he wrote an essay decrying the use of the term.-

R.I.P.
It's been a long time since I bought a Hogwood recording, but he did several things (eg Messiah, Exultante Jubilate, Brandenburg Concertos) which were major milestones for me on my music appreciation journey and which I still listen to frequently. I will hoist a glass in his memory tonight, perhaps to the sound of his Mozart Requiem.
Happy listening,
Jim

My Favorite Mozart Requiem recording. I prefer the Maunder version that is used in this recording. The Amen is nothing short of pure genius.
I love how Hogwood used boys for the treble and alto too.
The first Mozart requiem recording that didn't sound like a huge oratorio barn burner.
it's about the music
