I have found that I don't enjoy a lot of piano concertos. Lately,
I've been able to time shift the WFMT Beethoven Satellite Network and
listen at work. I was surprised to find I really enjoyed this piece.
Saint-Saëns: Piano Concerto #5 in F, Op 103, "Egyptian"
Royal Phil, André Previn
Jean-Philippe Collard, p
EMI/Ang - CDFB5-73356-2 (2)
Run Time: 28:58
What recordings of Saint-Saëns piano concertos and others can
you recommend?

In my opinion, you've already heard the best. Brightish, somewhat shallow EMI sound, but the most fun performances by far. The entire set of 5 concertos on two discs is available very cheaply as a Gemini reissue. I've owned others, including the expensive Hough. The latter has better sound and received rave reviews, but for some reason I really don't enjoy the piano playing. I've also owned the Malikova on Audite, and that was an even bigger disappointment, despite SACD sound. Never got around to the Roge/Dutoit set because they split one of the concertos between discs. There is no good excuse for that.Peace,

This received rave reviews when released. I have to say that it hasn't made much impression on me.
Is this on one of "Romantic Piano Concertos" series releases on Hyperion ?Sounds kind of familiar , I know I have a Saint Saens Violinn concertos on Hyperion
that is also very nice ( I have to remind myself to rip that one to HD before I turn in tonight)Thanks for tip on the Hough disc ( I particularly like his Rachmaninov Piano Ctos. set quite a bit)

I think all 5 of his concertos are worthwhile. I also like No.5 the best but the others are good too. A classic set is the one with Pascal Roge on Decca conducted by Charles Dutoit (with several orchestras). If you have SACD capability, I can also recommend the set on the Audite label with pianist Malikova conducted by Thomas Sanderling - very good performances and sound quality.
I like 'em all but then I'm a Saint-Saens fan man.
#2 has that great Bach like opening and #3 is a good 'un also.
