Kegel was a major conductor in East Germany, leading both the Leipzig Gewandhaus and the Dresden Staatskapelle during his career. Tragically, he ended his own life in 1990 - some say he was devastated by the fall of the eastern bloc, although he has suffered his entire life from clinical depression. Shades of Otto Klemperer.
I actually have no other recordings made by Kegel. I remember his set of Beethoven symphonies, which (as I recall) was one of the first to appear on CD but as I recall didn't receive that strong of a notice, and there always seemed so many other recordings to check out. I did look at arkivmusic to see what was available -somehow his Parsifal takes up 25 discs - not sure what's going on there.
There are a bunch of recordings of Mass in C. Gardiner got the nod from arkivmusic as the recommended version.
Follow Ups:
I owned that set of Kegel LVB symphonies, and they were perfectly middle-road performances and superb playing, marred by a rumbling but otherwise decent recording.
Peace,
Tom E
