Still grappling with the Missa Solemnis--so thick and densely scored/composed.
Follow Ups:
Can't get to the point of liking it even a little.
So what Beethoven do you listen to? I would think that anyone who responds to works like the 9th, Fidelio, the string quartets, Consecration of the House, etc, would respond positively to the Missa Solemnis. While the Missa Solemnis might be a long stretch from the Eroica or the 5th symphony, still....
I like (and apparently can follow what's going on in the balmy Sanctus), but otherwise can't seem to grab on to the rest.
I remember not "getting" the first mov't of Mahler's 8th but then everything snapped into place and I get a big adrenaline rush out it; esp. the Coda and build up to the "Veni" theme again.
I listened to the Beethoven Credo as if I were listening to the Mahler mov't above, but still no luck.
My favorite "HIP" group from the analog era and they always get recorded in a flattering acoustic. (Favorite HIP group after Savall, that is.) No Beethoven Mass, AFAIK unfortunately.
They turned in my favorite Bach Brandenburgs/Overtures and Christmas Oratorio as well.
and now have it on CD thanks to a passionate positive side-review in Gramophone.
with the Tolz Knabenchor, part of the appeal to me is that I was a boy cathedral chorister once. When girls were not recruited.
The sound is classic 2-mike coincident / near-coincident stereo and the recordings made in the Schloss (Kircheim?) are a good way to reveal how clear your system (which includes the room and where you sit) really are.
If someone finds these recordings over-reverberant then it's their system.

Wonderful work - completely different from the more contemplative Mass in C. I have heard it live 3 times - Blomstedt, N. Jarvi, and MTT. I can't tell you right now which is my favorite recording. I have two Karajans (the DG and the earlier EMI, on original Columbia discs, unfortunately marred by rumble), the Klemperer, Jochum, and several others.
