In Reply to: RE: Since we're talking about Barber does anyone else find his Adagio too "brooding" posted by David Smith on August 24, 2014 at 13:16:15
Alright, it's been a while since I've listened so I'll give it another try..
About how far in is this "climax" (Yeah, I'm pretty stubborn in my perceptions. I do have a feeling that the only way this piece would really work for me is if the composition drastically changed melodically after the climax continuously until it's conclusion,(but then it would'nt have been just the "Adagio for Strings" would it.?) )
Sorry, I might be a "Lost Cause" on this pretty "good" composition.
Follow Ups:
Without a score it would depend on which recording you were listening to but on the Berliner Philharmoniker recording I just checked out it's the section beginning with the Bb minor chord at 5:48 through the E major chord ending at 6:10. Roughly the golden section of the composition.
Taste/opinion is one thing but I would recommend staying away from rating compositions ("good" or otherwise) unless qualified to do so.

I'm sorry, but I have to take exception to anyone thinking I was stating a rating of a
composition .
All comments were only my "personal perceptions" & were never intended to be viewed
as a "public rating". I do think I'm qualified to express my private opinions, as they are only
"my" opinions . If your perception of what I was expressing is contrary, you are extremely
mistaken. (I will stop at this point, as I'd rather not say things that will necessitate my having
to give an apology for)
"Sorry, I might be a "Lost Cause" on this pretty "good" composition."
Apologies if I misunderstood you but that's how this statement read. I have no interest in holding you to a view you don't have.
