Nice photos, Madeline...and descriptions, Chris. Thanks to you both.
Just one comment: While I'm undoubtedly nutty, my vinylphilia is not responsible for it, as I've not found surface noise (except on poorly-made or -maintained black discs or associated playback hardware) to be an inherent attribute of the medium. Russell will probably understand when I blame my addled condition instead on, among other things, where I once worked. :-)

Hi, Jim! When I said "I'll never understand how vinylphiles can listen through all that surface noise", I should have added, "which is sometimes audible", for the surfaces of the LP used in the demo were, in fact, mostly quiet. However, there was this "wave" of surface noise which arose at the beginning and lasted for a few grooves. BTW, I'm not blaming the guy who was demo'ing, because he performed the usual "vinyl rituals" before playing the disc (carbon fiber brush, etc.!). In my own vinyl days, I remember this phenomenon as something which would sometimes just seem to happen out of the blue, regardless of how fanatical I was with the maintenance. Oh well!So now you've got me interested: where did you once work?

I think that wave of sound is caused by the lead in grooves which are cut at a greater pitch then the music gooves. Same thing with the lead out grooves at the end. I have a new ultrasonic cleaner which really makes a big difference in the audio quality I get from vinly although I can listen to a record full of clicks and pops and if it is a great performance still enjoy it. I have a built in click and pop filter in my brain. Thanks for the pictures from the California show.Yes the Sound Labs are monsters
