You are right that he (and eventually his son, I think) had to fight long and hard for the money and recognition he deserved, and in the end it was largely a pyrrhic victory, IIRC. Funny how the inventors are seldom the ones who get rich. The guy who invented the rabbit ears antenna got a lobster dinner, IIRC.
It could have been more, but not much more.
