This is from Debussy's account of a performance of Fauré's "Ballade", Op. 19, for piano and orchestra:The "Ballade" is almost as lovely as Mme. Hasselmans, the pianist. With a charming gesture, she re-adjusted her shoulder strap which slipped down at every lively passage. Somehow, an association of ideas was established in my mind between the charm of the aforementioned gesture and the music of Fauré. It is a fact, however, that the play of the graceful, fleeting lines described by Fauré's music may be compared to the gesture of a beautiful woman, without either suffering from the comparison.
Sounds to me like Yuja and other babe pianists ought to get the Fauré "Ballade" into their repertoires as soon as possible!

Why the scorn, Chris? Haven't you heard his Op. 100: 100 VIctorian Girls paddling on Walberswick Beach?
I thought not.
Surprising as it may seem, neither have I.
Of course, Debussy was involved in fem-chicanery throughout his productive life. He had a couple of dramatically weird relationships and scandals over the years. I'm sure he found the dropping strap quite alluring. But who knows what she actually looked like, since he was usually viewing women with one eye. haha

Marguerite Hasselmanns was Fauré's mistress. The picture shows the two of them:
It's often hard to tell with these 100+ year-old photos, but my first impression is. . . not bad! ;-)
