The usual tongue-in-cheek nonsense disclaimers, as well as a Mandytory invocation of Mandy Rice Davies' most famous bon mot, all apply.

Compared to how I remember how the vinyl of some of these recordings sounded, the sonics of these CDs are in most part disappointing.
How do you compare the sound of CDs which you have on hand to the sound of
vinyl of the same recording from years ago (I presume it's years ago)?
Could it be that you are just an un-reformed vinylphile and that digital
will never measure up to vinyl in your ears?

I've heard several RCA recordings on vinyl, and they were fabulous.... I have some pressings not in the set (most notably a Munch/BSO recording of Berlioz overtures), the sweet sound of RCA vinyl became harsh remastered to the CDs. And consistently so. I think it's more the execution of the transfers than the format itself. (I have other CDs that sound a lot better.)
The best overall digital version of these RCAs I've found was the SACD series issued a few years ago, if you have an SACD player. Otherwise, the JVC XRCD series, which included several of these titles, was good, though I think now OOP. For me, the real problem with this series is that I already own most of the titles in it that I really want, either digital or the original LPs. I'd rather see a reissue of some of the less well-known titles.
And now Analogue Productions is in the process of reissuing some of the same titles that Soundmirror issued in the original RCA SACD series from a few years ago. One big difference is that these new reissues are LESS generously filled (i.e., keeping exactly the same contents as on the original LP's). For instance, the Reiner/Chicago album of Respighi's Pines and Fountains contains only those works (just as on the LP), while the earlier Soundmirror SACD also included Debussy's La Mer.
And yet. . . although I have the earlier SACD's and XRCD's of many of these albums. . . I just couldn't help myself and gave in to the temptation of getting a couple of the new Analogue Productions SACD's: Reiner's Pines and Fountains as well as his Sheherazade. I then compared my copies of the AP SACD's, the SM SACD's, and (in the case of the Respighi) the JVC XRCD.
Maybe my assessment is influenced by our human psychology of thinking that when we pay more for something, it must be better. (Let's not even go near audio equipment here!). Nevertheless, it seems to me that the new AP SACD incarnations of these performances are the best yet in terms of timbre, separation, and sense of space (more of my comments on SA-CD.net - link below). I may be stupid, but I think I may be buying more of these AP SACD reissues as they come out. And BTW, they are planning some titles (such as the Szeryng Symphonie espagnole) which were not in the earlier SACD series. So FWIW. . .
...so you're not imagining things. (Or maybe we both are!) Just got the next two installments today (Reiner's 'Pictures' and Fiedler's Gershwin), so more comparative listening ahead!

I love the Reiner Pictures in terms of performance and recording - however, I've never been a fan of the Ravel orchestration itself (so foreign sounding to Mussorgsky's musical ideas). Please let us know however about the new incarnations!
BTW, speaking of orchestrations of "Pictures", have you heard this one?:
I've been meaning to post about it for a long time. It outdoes Ravel's in being over the top, and the sound quality is boffo! (One funny thing is on the video background of the track selection on the TV, the performers are listed as Slatkin/Lyon - that'll teach Naxos to use boiler-plate for for their track selection wallpaper! LOL!)

if they aren't limited to the most famous issues. I've never felt the need to buy the same few releases over and over to search for a sq improvement, for Fritz Reiner or the Beatles. ;)
is that I can now start collecting 'digital' versions of the Reiner Scheherazade to add to my collection of the dozen or so I have on vinyl?
Whoopee!
Probably wait for ever though!

I have both on LP, and actually prefer Szeryng's account.
So now will this make two?
;-)!

Yes, imo that's a problem with several of the Heifetz concerto recordings, and a number of concerto recordings of other soloists of the early stereo era. Whether that was due to the ego of the soloists or the recording engineers, I don't know.
