Thanks for all the good advice. I'll certainly consider the van Karajan or the Guilini recording. One that wasn't mentioned, an SACD, is the Jaap van Zweden recording on Challenge Classics. It's very well reviewed in Fanfare, but pricy at two disks. He's done quite a bit of Bruckner. Anyone familiar with his recordings?
Because I was going to the concert I became familiar with the symphony (before knowing only the usual 4, 7 and 9) through the youtube video of Celidibache. So now it's time to get a recording or two.
Follow Ups:
Listening now to the 'mid rez' Lossless FLAC version.
He did near to the whole Buckner series on EXTON, wondering why some are on Challenge and others on EXTON, albeit all SACD?
Haydn Symphonies - I like them (and they're hi-rez!), but I'm not sure what these recordings tell us about his Bruckner.
Also, since you mention Celibidache, I have all of his his EMI and DG recordings, and I like the Bruckner recordings from both of these sets too, although his slow tempos sometimes might strain some listeners' suspension of disbelief. (BTW, I believe the EMI/Munich recording is a different one from any of the videos with the Munich Phil.)
Listening on 'mid rez' QOBUZ but bet it's pretty good in SACD.
Differing version below with the NHK Symphony Orchestra:
