I'm no Bruckner maven, but my friend Bruckner9, who is, also loves this performance. I have always been partial to HvK's last recording, with the VPO as well, but I have just (let's see) - 4 recordings of the 8th. It is my favorite Bruckner symphony, though.

As you said, "let's see". I have Giulini's, Klemperer's, Haitink's first effort, Szell's, both Jochum's, both Solti's, and all three stereo von Karajan's. I like the 8th. If I had to pick one, it would be the last von Karajan with the VPO. The Penquin gave it a rosette when it first came out, and even taking into account their bias favoring von Karajan recordings, I think they got it right. There is something special about that particular recording. I have the older two disc set but it has been remastered and re-released on a single disc.Forgot: Have the Boulez/VPO and Tintner also.

achieve the otherwordly glow that Wand coaxes from both his orchestra and the cathedral acoustic.
