I regularly watch 60 Minutes and was very uplifted by this program. It was a surprise out of nowhere. I served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in sub-Saharan West Africa and have traveled many of the countries from Senegal down to the Congo.
I could almost smell the tropical odors and feel the oppressive heat and humidity. So many of these countries have suffered from tribal conflicts and civil wars. On top of this are corrupt governments, poverty, and disease. The Congo is only the worst.
Yet this orchestra is a remarkable achievement to come out of such an environment. It shows the power of music. I watched the linked video. For me the experience was even more powerful the second time. This is 60 Minutes at its best.
The book "King Leopold's Ghost" was a real eye opener.
Wonderful!
Thanks for posting that, I fell asleep before that segment came on.

From Wikipedia:
"The Missa Luba is a version of the Latin Mass based on traditional Congolese songs. It was arranged by Father Guido Haazen, a Franciscan Friar from Belgium, and originally performed and recorded in 1958 by "Les Troubadours du Roi Baudouin", a choir of Congolese children from Kamina."
I was introduced to this by a school music teacher back in the 60's and it has left an indelible mark on my musical consciousness. Here are a couple of YouTube videos of two of the songs on the original recording:
I agree a very beautiful record.

The movie brought the music to the attention of some who didn't know it already. Coincidentally, "If" was shown at my neighborhood theatre about three weeks ago.
..i saw the broadcast...what an amazing story....i think it ended up being a '3 tissue story'..
Some of the singing brought tears to my eyes.

What a story!
