I did the same thing that you did back in the LP days, except that I didn't get a single 12-LP set. I got 4 3-LP sets instead - I think I had two sets of English pressings and two sets of German Electrola pressings. As well as I remember, at least one of the German sets was a Quad issue.
Unlike you however, I found the sound of the CD reissues to be fine (not disappointing at all IMHO), although later I also acquired the DVD-Audio of the Kempe Alpine Symphony and Also sprach Zarathustra when it became available. (I don't miss my LP's at all!)![]()

How about that? They were great performances and I loved the sound of that East German orchestra in Dresden, very different from orchestras in the west in those days. They had Strauss in their genes it seemed, but Kempe was a magician, too. He did some Strauss with the Royal Philharmonic that is excellent as well.
I thought the CDs had issues in the treble, sort of what was called digititis at the time. I haven't listened to them in a long time, and will try them again with my newer equipment. I have a way better cdp than I used to, for one thing.
It would be interesting to find out how they would transfer to SACD like all the recent EMI reissues coming out that way now, Since some were done in quadriphonic I'd think they would be prime candidates for SACD remastering.
And in multi-channel to boot. Like you, I really like the sound of the Dresdeners. I haven't listened to my set in a long time - I'll try to re-listen too (but maybe not for a few days, I'm really under the weather right now).

Too bad about the steep price. I have it on EMI "Studio." from back in the 80s. First class.

Yes - The Sawallisch set of Schumann Symphonies (with that striking Caspar David Friedrich painting reporduced on the cover!) is another example where I owned (and treasured) my English (not US!) pressings back in my LP days. Sawallisch held sway in this repertoire for decades it seemed. I do feel now that a couple of more recent sets (such as the ones by Skrowaczewski and Beermann) have equaled his accounts - although those newer sets lack the special tonal characteristics of Sawallisch's Dresdeners. The Beermann set is on SACD:

Yes, I have the cpo set, too, and find the sound of that orchestra similar at least to the Dresdeners. Thanks for pointing this set out to others here who may not be aware of it. Besides Sawallisch and cpo, I have at least three other complete sets of the Schumann symphonies, and yes, I have WAY too many CDs.
Were you the one who originally recommended the Beermann set on this board? I can't remember, but I got my set in response to that recommendation - so thanks to you, or to whomever originally posted about it. The Schumann symphonies are kind of a special cause for me, and I've owned a lot of sets over time - Szell, Karajan, Kubelik, Paray, Chailly, Dausgaard, Levine, Foster, Oramo, Sinopoli, etc. (in addition to the Sawallisch, Skrowaczewski, and Beermann sets already mentioned). I've found most of these performances lacking in one way or another, although, in addition to the sets mentioned previously that I DO like, I also like the old Paray set, even though it now shows its age sonically.
Although I don't recollect it clearly, I guess I did recommend the cpo set on this site maybe last year some time. I'd forgotten it.
You've heard more versions of Schumann than I have, but I remember when as a kid, maybe ten years old, being blown away by a Mercury Lp of the Rhenish symphony. I suppose since it was on Mercury, it was the Paray recording.
Wouldn't it be nice to be able to once again experience hearing for the first time all the great works of music. That's one reason i sometimes envy classical music novices. They have so many rewarding discoveries ahead of them.
