I also wanted to comment on your remark, "recording techniques went backward rather than forward as the technology improved and gave engineers too many toys to play with". While this is true of the major labels (for the most part), there are some smaller labels which have produced outstanding minimally-microphoned recordings. In particular, I'm thinking of the truly remarkable series of DVD-A's on the Nishimura label. Unforturnately, I'm not sure how available these recordings are at the moment. These recordings also need a real DVD-A player, and not just a regular DVD player.
Tried to Google this but no luck so I suspect you are right in that they are no longer available.
Seems MC/hi-res is focussed on SACD - makes sense with their dual layer CD/SACD format. However I find no difference in quality between DVD-A & SACD. The bigger determinant is the recording technique which can not only boil down to mic placement/mixing but the quality of the mic itself.
That said, the bottom line is how the artistic interpretation appeals to the listener and what is great for one person does not necessarily appeal to another. All of which makes variety in life more interesting, if not controversial at times!

Sadly (or is it happily?) an incurable audio-video nutter with an indecent number of toys. Classical music forever!!!!
