Return to Planar Speaker Asylum
80.116.133.155
I bought a pair of new 1.7i in march 2017. After some months one of the speakers started to reproduce a noise in the bass frequencies. I sent back the speaker to the dealer here in Italy. After 4 months! he returned me back a "supposed" new speaker. The serial number is the same, and he told me that Magnepan maintained the same number!. Anyway, the speaker was a bit different from the original (slightly different color of the wood at the edges). But the real problem is that the surface of the mylar is grossly deformed. I found some similar pattern on internet (so called wave pattern). Is that acceptable from a company like Magnepan? Could be a shipping damage? Even if it sounds properly, should I return the speaker to the dealer for a new couple of MG 1.7i?
I would like to contact directly Magnepan for showing my problem. Does anyone know how do e-mail Magnepan?
Thank you in advance. Diego Fontana

Wendell Diller, Magnepan's marketing director, saw your post and asked me to let you know that this is air pressure damage from the speaker having been dropped on a hard, flat service. He suggested that you give him a call -- he can handle this kind of situation more effectively on the phone than he could by email.
Thanks Josh for your suggestion. For the moment i am waiting a new pair of MG 1.7. The dealer told me they would arrive within the end of the month. We will see!DF

So the dealer is replacing them?
Yes, he is going to replace them.....I hope it is true!
Good luck!
I know it's been 5 years for you, but I hope you've had yours replaced. From my appaling experience with Magnepan, you still may not have them! My new pair were suffering a buzzing/vibrating noise at certain bass frequencies at certain volumes, and when I looked at the panel on the offending speaker, I saw a 'rippling' of the upper LH corner, over a large(ish) area, of about a squate foot.
It took Magnepan 15 MONTHS to replace the faulty panel!!
The whole Magnepan infrastructure is a complete mess, and several staff need fireing, IMO! They never ever answered the phone, and when I left messages, no-one ever returned any calls made to them. I was ghosted with zero answers to emails for Months on end! I received completely different 'stories' from different Magnepan employees as to why. I have been told many many times by different dealers that Magnepan is the most weird company to deal with, making the most weird and illogical decisions.
As a long time Maggie owner, going back to the MG Ib, I have always loved them, and they used to have a good customer relation feedback, but no longer! Now, Magnepan, you are a disgrace to the Hi-Fi community. Get your act together.
Great!
I think Diego is living in Torino/Italy and as far as I know the European distributor Audionord may handle a case like this. It is very similar to what happend to my Tympani midrange driver three years ago. If this happend during shipping, I doubt anyone will take responsibilty for the damage.
I'd think it's the shipper who's responsible, backed by insurance. But if I understand correctly, this kind of damage can't occur when the speaker is in the box, since it's caused by a fall against a hard surfaee.
I think this kind of damage can occur even if the speakers are in the box.
I just got an email from Wendell and you're absolutely right:"Air pressure damage can happen in or out of the box. If the box is stood vertically on end and allowed to fall, the shock travels through the carton causing the diaphragm to stretch. It can occur if the box falls over from a vertical position."

Not only is that not right, in the future getting support for those speakers will be a lot more tough where you are. Accept nothing short of a correct pair.
Thank You grantv. I already thought by myself to pretend a new couple go MG1.7.i.
Is that what it looks like when you put a hair dryer to the mylar?
That is not something Magnepan would knowingly send out. Contact them and send it in for actual repair this time. Don't know if your dealer is responsible for this but he gave you back something worse than what you sent in for repair.
If Magnepan replaced the speaker, then the serial number would be different. Frankly, your dealer is lying to you. If Magnepan did the repair, it would not look like that (nor would a new speaker).
I married the perfect woman. The downside is everything that goes wrong is my fault.

Looks like the mylar has lost tension. I know if it were me I'd be a bit pissed. Looks shady as hell.
Not sure if Magnepan answers emails, they may now since the designer peeps in here every now and then. When I lived overseas I had skype phone; for a few bucks a year (I think $26 USD) I could call anywhere in the world for free or in some areas dirt cheap. Ditto for the magic phone.
I'd call Magnepan and ask if they indeed perform the repair (they should record your serial number when brought in); I seriously doubt they did. I'd inspect the shipping box too, if it doesn't appear to have sustain any damage then I'd march right into the dealer and let him have it.
I don't think it is a tension problem. For what I red on web it could be a shipping damage, even if the box that returned to me was intact. I also think the dealer lied to me. That is the reason i would like to contact the Magnepan staff, to know what exactly ran between them and my dealer. If anyone knows the way to e.mail them pls tell me.
No that is not acceptable by any means. I sent you relevant info. I've been through the same.
Use the phone no. on their website. They are not really set up for email communication. The are a manufacturer, not a retailer.
PM sent.
