Yes if it is a bass panel you can disconnect it from the circuit and continue to use the speaker. If it is just a single bass panel you will not notice any difference.
Disconnect both the bias wire on the back and all the audio jumpers to the panel. Make new jumpers to connect the rest of the outer ring by-passing the offending bass panel.

Thank you for your prompt reply, kentaja!
I have to prepare for a solid number work hours on my work bench then, I'm sure... Do you happen to know if somebody have published a photo sequence showing a dismantling of the 63/988/989?

Don't know of any on-line guides. The 98 series is a bit more difficult versus the 63.
Turn the speaker upside down and remove the bottom plate. The entire bass assembly will need to be remove. It is attached to the upper assembly with (8) M7 bolts. Remove the bolts. Unsolder the two wires soldered to the delay assembly. Unsolder the wire going to the EHT supply. Remove the sniffer antenna wire going through the delay line assembly.
Now the entire bass assembly can removed. Remove the grille.
Remove the front/rear screens. They are screwed to the frame. You can use a flat head screw driver to pry them off the frame.
Remove the dust assemblies, front/back, by using the flat head screw driving an inserting in the top slots on either side of the covers. Pry the corners loose and remove the covers. DO NOT CUT OFF.
Thank's, that will of great help!
I put this aside until I have grown enough courage to try it... In the mean time I have my new set of Quad 2912:s to listen to!
