Return to Planar Speaker Asylum

My friend is a musician, but he caught the bug many years ago and has now worked his way up to a spectacular sounding system with 1.7is being driven by a pair of 7B ST monoblocks. The system is in the living room, but he has them set up well and they are not compromised. They are dialed in, last night I was over and was floored by the size and realism they presented.
Now his wife has decided to redo the living room, and the tug of war between keep and sell the 1.7is has begun. His wife wants on wall.
I have owned several pairs of Maggie's over the years, but I have no idea how well the newer smaller wall mounted Magnepans sound. Are they able to perform at a 1.7 level?
What other options are worth looking into?
Thanks

E passed this on to Wendell at Magnepan and he suggested that your friend give him a call to discuss the issue.
Well, I am delighted that my system elicits such passionate support! I love the Maggie's. I am doing everything I can to reattach my balls and keep my ears as happy as my neighbors are unhappy (my dipole speakers fire into a shared wall).
So far, I have my wife convinced that a salamander console will do more for our room's decor than getting rid of the speakers.... for now. My hope is that the 1.7i's suddenly appear avant guard once the amps are at least in a swanky new cabinet;).
One thought I had was to send the speakers to Peter gunn for some wedge wood camouflage. I thought it might blend in, but it's not looking good if I am being honest... I still maintain hope; but, I wish that the claims on magnepan's website were accurate. It would be lovely to find someone who finds wall mounted Maggie's as satisfying as what I have now.
Do you know anyone who has heard both? I've heard the on-walls but only as part of a Tri-Center system, so can't say from personal experience. I do have the impression that they're pretty close to the floor standers, but few have a chance to hear them since most dealers don't carry them. You basically have a similar lineup of drivers from 100 Hz on up, and a couple of DWM's should give you comparable bass extension.
IAE no matter how well on-walls might sound, I think behind the wall wiring is required to meet anyone's acceptance factor. (Wiring laid on the floor taught that I'm unable to fly.)
Good point. Well, I guess some people don't care, aren't some flat screen TV's mounted on the wall with visible wires? It's really easy to run the wire through the wall, though, just punch a couple of holes in the sheetrock and fish the cable through. Those who don't have a fish tape can use a straightened coat hanger and some masking tape. Or just have the dealer do it.
Wiring on the floor taught my cat to fly...
I took my amp - for the quad '57s - into the shop last week, and upon returning hooked it up - and started playing some music as my Significant other came into our room (Yes the quads are in the MBR) - and I was greeted with "is this a new amp? these sound much better!"
Mind you the main rig has been relegated to the smallest room in the house- and there 'shall be no turntable in the Living Room'...
So, my suggestion is to demo the speaker against the wall - and then back in their previous position- (assuming that her ears are good) and you should not have an issue....
Good luck
Happy Listening

So long as you haven't (yet) been told there shall be no bed in the MBR for you and that you must sleep on a cot in the basement.
She may like these, smaller, easy on the eye (at least for me) I was seriously considering these speakers before buying Maggies. Lots of great comments over the internet, Clayton seems to be a knowledgeable and accessible guy.
Good luck to your friendhttp://www.spatialaudio.us/hologram-m3-m4

Those are really nice looking! Thanks for sharing
At a mere 3 ft tall this is a pretty unobtrusive speakers, that said is not the looks that I really care about but the sound quality and apparently these have 'em in spades. Here is an interesting review

no relation of any kind with this Co. just my 2 cents contribution
Good luck!
Have him try a Limage setup against the sidewalls. You can place low furniture in front and behind the speakers and they "frame" the room visually rather than dominate it. The speakers go over the span of the short wall about 1/3-1/2 way into the room perpendicular to the sidewalls and offset from them by appx 10-12". It is like on walls in that you just rotate them sideways when not in use and relocating back to listening angle is just a rotation back to face forwards.
If you can show us the room we can come up with more ideas how to place a 1.7 less conspicuously. Also would help. to know what the WAF's remodeling goal is. Like a pic from a home decor mag.
I'd seriously consider the mini Maggies, small, unobtrusive and you could actually place them on top of a coffee table (or two). I'd also get a decent sub (or the one offered with it) hidden and out of the way of course, to add an extra layer of smoothness and lower punch. It's interesting Magnepan's website now touts them as a NON-computer speaker a description which seems to bounce it's way back and forth among the planar community.
In any event it has a home trial so if it doesn't work out you can simply ship them to me ; )

I have had them, and they are very nice but this room may be too much for them.
How about some floor standing JansZens?
They will be much less obtrusive.
Being monopoles they can be put back against the walls.
The amps will drive the JansZens easily.
They can be room highlights, say the red ones,
Or they can blend in, like being painted the wall colour.
And, they will sound at least as good as the 1.7s, probably better.
Could consult with the wife regarding colour (now that is a real nice gesture!).
Real selling point is how much less obtrusive they are!
Remember: a happy wife is a happy life!!!!!
Will say my wife did eventually get used to my spectra 22s and they are much more obtrusive than the maggies!
Just some thoughts
Bruce
The Maggie on-walls can certainly pass the WAF test (see below), but I was able to also get there with 20.1's by making the rest of the decor match with the Maggie frames and cloth (see second pic):

So... I think the decision is obvious. He just needs to move up to the 20s. :).
Beautifully done. These pics may be some good ammo.
Sorry, not even close.
"What other options are worth looking into?"
Get a different wife??
Dave.
Divorce

Lol, I will let her know the consensus here was such.
Trouble is, getting rid of the wife may leave you without a house to put the 1.7s in. :-((

"Trouble is, getting rid of the wife may leave you without a house to put the 1.7s in. :-(("IMO he should stand his ground, and not yield to any such demands (from wife or others) and continue to enjoy listening to his system as it exists, in the space it currently occupies.
The most he could lose his half the value of their house. If his wife be so miserable, not allowing him this little satisfaction she isn't worth having.
If he loses 1/2 the value of their house, so would she. That should give her second thoughts. The idea that I would shop around for some alternate speakers so that she can re-vamp their living room is ludicrous.

Well, if I guy lets his wife store his balls in a jar in the kitchen, she deserves the house.
Dave.
LOL. Perhaps you should confine your opinions to crossovers :).
How about just marking the correct spots on the floor with a piece of tape or yarn and moving the speakers when listening and then return them to the wall?
Years ago I "compromised" by putting my system in storage (for almost 7 years) and finding a home with a dedicated listening room. Fortunately, at the time I was so busy that I really didn't have much time to listen.
I married the perfect woman. The downside is everything that goes wrong is my fault.
Even better, get rid of the wife and replace her with a girlfriend (or two). GF's are better; once one owns you you're right back where you started ;-).
