Return to Planar Speaker Asylum
98.24.83.147
Well I said I was not going to do this upgrade being that the 3.7 sounded unreal with my plinius....the upgrade itch hit and old dominion picked them up today and are in route to Maggie for not on,y the I upgrade but the aluminum side moldings-going stealth all black on the sides and cloth-they are going to give them a complete checkup along with the upgrade-the hard part now is the wait-filling in are a pair of Ryan r610 monitors performing admirably while filling in-
I am hoping the upgrade is worth the cost and wait-

The best Maggie upgrade is a larger listening room.

I just got my 3.7's back from Magnepan for the i upgrade. The presentation does seem warmer. I'm loving them!
I just switched back from the IIIa to my 3.7i. The older speaker imaged better due to more upper midrange emphasis, and has clearly superior low bass extension. However, I couldn't live with it longer term as the overall frequency balance -- even with two DWMs -- was just too thin sounding because of the above upper midrange emphasis. It just got annoying after a while in my larger room with my set up and my gear (important caveats)
The newer speaker wisely sacrifices bass extension for quality and quantity in the middle and upper range where most music lives.
I don't miss my MGIIIA's because of the dreaded bass flap, that happened once in awhile. Happy with my 3.6's though if I had the room I would have 20.1's.
I just switched the other direction. For the first time this year I switched my 3.7i's with my old pair of MG IIIa's. The III's had suffered from some loose connections in the crossover. I fixed it recently and then just for fun decided to reinsert the old speakers in my large room.
Some things better, some worse, but I am actually scratching my head now and wondering why I spent $6000 on the new speakers (two years ago). The two models, separated by a quarter century sound much more alike than different.
The basic speaker hasn't changed in decades. There's been nothing (significantly) evolutionary in that time......it's all fine-tuning.
Dave.
It is. I heard the upgrade in NY. Smoother and rounder result, even with very analytical Canadian electronics.
