Return to Planar Speaker Asylum

These are some freaky bastardized speakers, not really much in the looks dept and seller wants $7k. Anybody live nearby and want to take a listen?

Appropos the frankenpan contraptions, here is a high end Italian idea on the IRS lines but with LS9 like mid and bass columns. It is a dipole speaker with a subwoofer tower
.They use AMT mid/tweets and a ribbon supertweeter and have a dedicated set of line filters and amplification. Where things move away from what I have seen work before is the excess mids and midwoofers. It looks like a setup for driver integration problems and difficulty in obtaining coherent sound. The horizontal MTM setup though interesting appears like a gigantic waste of resources.
Wonder if that price includes that cool subwoofer disguised as an oven?
The Strathern midrange drivers are not true ribbon drivers. They have a tensioned plastic film diaphragm partially driven (centrally). The Carver's are very similar.
Swami, wouldn't you like to have a self-cleaning subwoofer?
How does the Monsoon midrange compare to Magnepan's midrange on say the 3.6 or 20.1?

That is from an old audiogon ad.
They are pretty much as good as it gets in midrange/treble but require transformers since they are pure ribbons IIRC.
They were a Harry Pearson favorite.
This seller has been constructing Frankenpans from multiple source components from EMITS and EMIMS from old Infinities to these Monsoon and Strathern hybrids. The Original concept dates back to Harry Pearson's mating of Tympani bass panels with ML CLS, and his suggestion of using IRS mid/treble units with T bass. It also follows the tradition from Mark Levinson's day of assembling stacked Quads with Decca Ribbons and Hartley woofers.
There is no reason to doubt the potential of these builds. This just continues an old tradition of planar custom designs. I am sure some work with a designer for fabric covers will benefit the appearance.
Another Frankenpan at $8k this time, I hope AndyR doesn't have a copyright on the term Frankenpan and sues me.Magnaplaner Tympani 1-D 6 Panel System - the 6 white panels 6 two foot Strathern Midrange Ribbons 40 Full Line Source Infinity EMIT Tweeters 1 Dahlquest DQLP-1 Electronic Crossover.
What is the background on the Strathern midrange ribbons?

Haha, TT - I've been using the term for many years ... but I certainly wouldn't dream of suing you! :-))
Those speakers have taken the 'mongrel' concept way beyond what I have done! All I did was construct some 3-ways using drivers from 2 different 'retired' Maggies - whereas the ones shown have incorporated different drivers.
I really should re-name mine 'Maggie mongrels' and let the term 'Frankenpan' be used for the ones in the ads.
But you may find the following interesting ... a mate of mine who bought some non-working Tymp-1Ds, who I have been helping to restore them to better than they would've sounded, when they were new (courtesy hardwood frames and braced stands) is going to add some true-ribbons, when his bank balance recovers. That will be an interesting 'mongrel' speaker.
Regards,
Andy
