I recall many years ago doing the math of a XO upgrade (MG3.6) vs that of a 1.6r (which I was doing) I believe it was in the >$4K range compared to around $1200 for a 1.6.
Of course cost is always relative in this hobby..YMMV
Follow Ups:
I priced out a upgrade of the 3.7i using Erse 12G copper foil inductors and Obbligato Gold Premium caps and came up with about $500 for a pair which is not too bad. Obviously, the price can be significantly higher when using boutique caps.
The 3.6 is a much more expensive upgrade because of 4th order LP filter with a 200 uF cap. Personally I think one gets a bigger bang for the buck by going to an active biamp rather than a simple upgrade of the OEM especially if you go DIY for the active crossover. I already mentioned the problem going to a parallel XO with the 3.7i but I did price out my simulation (passive) and it was close to $1000.
I think the caps I was looking at were Hovlands which at the time didn't have the exact value needed therefore requiring several caps to be 'stacked'.
"I think you lose the coherence they get with the way the original XO works as you will have to do a 2nd order XO mid/bass while the series XO uses single pole slopes to create the same slope so as to keep the mids out of trouble."
I not sure the series crossover alone is responsible for the better coherence. The bass/mid driver is really different too.
I guess then that we need a victim volunteer to take apart his 3.7i and redo it for biamping with a parallel electronic/PLLXO and see how well that works.
