Heard both...Preferred the 1.7i's
More coherent...sounds like a single driver...
Play bigger...deeper wider sound stage...
more detail without being edgy...aka smoother??
Images are more defined within the sound stage...
Tighter bottom...round and bouncy
Slightly blacker background, which makes things seem more extended...don't know if they really are...
BUT this is just my opinion...if you can...go give them a listen...
Thanks
Mark

Sounds like an across the board upgrade, without any real downside.
EXCEPT for the risk of shipping....both ways. But if they do what Mark Man says may be worth it. Certainly the 3.7 needed and the difference was marked...I would try the 5222 inductor before I took the risk.
1.7's are not upgradeable by Magnepan...only the 3.7's...FYI...Must buy the 1.7i's...
I drove 20 minutes to White Bear Lake, MN to get my 3.7's to the I's...worth $500...no brainer...
Thanks
Mark
U1's PX and Transformer Upgrade cost??? Just curious...I think yours came with the latest and greatest...I still lust...
Well he could upgrade the crossover and buy Mye Stands and the 1.7's would come very close to the 1.7i's (imo :))
I have heard both. It is no contest and quite necessary. To my ears they really worked it out. I do not where a lot of people got the idea that the 1.7's were upgradeable by Magnepan. No doubt the mid range on the 1.7's should be smoothed out but as they are they are very engaging and provide a great sound stage with depth and separation but have some rough patches on certain cd's. Family traffic in apartment living bound me to solid state.Thanks. May I ask what are you driving the 3.7i 's with?
