I'm thinking I would be safe with a 16 AWG? Should I attempt to use the old clips or there is a better way to reattach the wires? I think with 14-16 AWG I'll run into problems using the old clips so any suggestions? I tried finding the gauge used by the crosby mod but I haven't had much success. Also should I go with a solid or stranded wire?

No 16 gauge will not work it is much too large. 22 gauge solid core is what the factory used and anything larger or stranded should be avoided. If larger wire is used if will never clip to or seat to the panels properly.
IMO different wire on the secondary side(high voltage) has no impact on performance. When I service Crosby modified speakers I remove the garden hose wire they used, throw it in the trash, and install the proper 22 gauge solid core wire. A nice tinned copper is more than adequate but you can use silver wire if desired.
Alrighty, got some 22 AWG silver plated solid wire on order. I agree the crosby mod wires do look rather oversized and sloppy. Now the 220uf input cap...should I go multiple film or a single film with a 1.5uf bypass? I'll probably swap out the resistor too.
Sorry, I don't know. Next time I have mine apart, I will take a look.
