You asked about tubes...
Sometimes I drive my MMGs with tubes, sometimes with solid state. If you can find a rebuilt pair of Dynaco MkIII with 6550 or KT-88 outputs or a pair of Heathkit W-5M you will find that either produces beautiful music and soundstaging from the MMGs. Put on some solo Knopfler with or without Emmylou Harris and don't plan on going anywhere for a while. Resist the urge to buy the more available Jolida integrated or Dynaco Stereo 70--they are not substitutes for the MkIII.
I am guessing that home theater is not your priority. If it is, you will probably be happier with a big solid state amp.
Follow Ups:
You should give Emotiva a try. Power to dollar ratio they lead the pack and hard to beat in my opinion.
They also have a 30 day money back trial period.
I am using a MC275 that was rebuilt by MIke Samra that sounds very nice to me.
