I second the notion of showing pics of the new amps. Does it still use op amps on the input section? I remember updating the original Fairchilds(?) with TL084s which was easy to do since they were socketed.
I still have a sweet spot for the Acoustax X with servos as they were my first stats purchased in '77. I moved to the Monitor 4 a year or so later when they became available.

I'll get some snaps of them posted as soon as I can. Yes, they still use an op amp. When Mike started to upgrade Strickland's design, he had the choice to as much as possible work with what he had, or go completely off the reservation. He opted to upgrade/uprate the op amp rather try to rig up some kind of tubed driver setup. One of the issues with the amps is that there is not much free space around the input to mount an input driver board, etc. The one Joe Curcio came up with was probably the most elegant one I've seen, but I kind of worry about his design layout because long-term exposure to the heat generated from the output tubes. Anyway, I'll try to get a good close up of what Mike has done with the op amp and input section. A tubed input is potentially a further mod, but I have a feeling I'm not going to see a need for more upgrades for quite a long while.
I think you are right, a well done OPA 627 stage is hard to beat so that further upgrades are likely to provide better bang for the buck elsewhere in the amp and speaker.
