You may want to check out used speakers in the 3.x series, your room is big enough and as you say it's hard to go back from a true ribbon to a quasi ribbon although the 1.7 is apparently closer to the true ribbon sound. Plus you'll get even more of an improvement in bass extension and dynamics.

Yes, but IMO, anything bigger would be better suited for placement along the short wall with more space behind them, and firing into the depth of the room.The 1.6's would be a perfect step up from MMG's.

I think they'd all be better against the short wall, and also without the fireplace behind them (based on my unfortunate fireplace experience),
