I think the size will be fine and you'll get the improved dynamics and bass, as well as better imaging. AFAIK the treble won't be better, they're both quasi ribbon drivers so you'd have to go to the 1.7 with its supertweeter to get a significant improvement in that.

there is really no downside to buying used Maggies assuming they are in good condition. If they don't work for you, just sell them for the same price. It's like a 30 day free trial except the trial can be 180 days or whatever.
Wow, great community!
Will arrange to listen and likely buy.
When auditioning used maggies, has anyone posted a list of things to check out. I can listen for vibrations/rattles, anything else?
Thanks!
Albert, you may want to audition the MG 1.6s armed with a test disc that plays tones from 20-HZ to 20,000. Listen for buzzes and odd sounds.
Check for curling of the wires at the ends of the runs using an LED flashlight.
If you are considering the pair on CAM don't worry about the small holes on the rear of the socks. Sheila at Magnepan will sell you a new set for about $40.00 US.
Removal of the thin wood stiles without breakage is the only difficult part and if needed they are also available for a reasonable price.
If you find small de-laminations while replacing socks you can use DAP- if you have a friend in the U.S.- or another alternative. If they sound as good as they look they are a no-brainer!
I have poked around the net looking for a downloadable 20-20K frequency sweep with a 60+ sec duration as (preferably as a wav file or in an ISO but to no avail. Any suggestions as where I should look? Hitting the road tomorrow morning to go test the 1.6. Hopefully coming back with speakers and a big grin. Might even have an Emotiva amp too... I have heard that they play well together.
Thanks
Albert
Can you get your hands on one of these by tomorrow?
I use track 7 for a frequency sweep.

Good luck with your road trip and enjoy the MG 1.6s.
Yes, the 1.6's will work just fine in that room. If you can save up the 1.7's will be better
Alan
Great!
Essentially the upgrade is a no brainer as the swap should cost me less than $350 USD once the MMG's sold.
Will look at the 1.7s in a few years, once the itch hits again. I am trying very hard to concentrate on the music rather than the gear.
I fear that the ribbon tweeter on my desktop Adams Audio studio monitors may have spoiled me for quasi ribbons, but we will see.
Many thanks!
Albert
I had 1.6s, do not be afraid of using the tweeter attenuator resistors and an inductor inline.
That era, 3.6 and 1.6 seemed to run a bit hot for me stock, but the tweet attenuator fixes it well.
You may want to check out used speakers in the 3.x series, your room is big enough and as you say it's hard to go back from a true ribbon to a quasi ribbon although the 1.7 is apparently closer to the true ribbon sound. Plus you'll get even more of an improvement in bass extension and dynamics.
Yes, but IMO, anything bigger would be better suited for placement along the short wall with more space behind them, and firing into the depth of the room. The 1.6's would be a perfect step up from MMG's.

I think they'd all be better against the short wall, and also without the fireplace behind them (based on my unfortunate fireplace experience),
Agree with the above. Should work very well.
