You should do well with the larger Rogue Pharoah hybrid integrated at 1/3rd less
The W4S ST 500 and the new Emotiva preamp (not the older model that was a lesser performer), are also well within the price range and should do better on power.
Also consider a classic tube preamp with a modern class D amp - particularly like the Rogue hybrids using the Hypex current generation of boards, which are very highly regarded.
The Parasound A21 is a great choice and often comes up on the used market.
If you are a tube guy then consider a 100 watt tube amp since you are intending to get a subwoofer. If you cut off the speakers at about 60-80 hz you don't need as much power.
Follow Ups:
I have heard the Rogue several times in NJ with the 1.7's. They had no bite at the bottom...Solid sate power is cheap and many companies offer more than satisfactory products at ridiculously reasonable prices Odyssey, Emotiva..
Occurred to me that you were referring to the Rogue Pharaoh not a tube Rogue. was that the case?
The listening occurred five years ago. I had my heart set on tube amplification for the 1.7's . I believe it was the Cronos Magnum -=one step down from the top of the line. I brought organ music abd Mahler's 8th Symphony and it puffed and huffed. . I did hear it with the VTL and it was different story but the the latter was 3X the price. Maggies work with tube amps(I do not think I am alone in this) only with the very best tube amplification.I heard the the 3.7"s with big ARC's, and it did surpass a solid state Canadian amp of that was 2/3's price but it was close.
High current solid state amplification, does a credible job in involving me in the music I listen to. I get depth , , detail and a sense of the performance space from relatively inexpensive high current amplification with plenty of listed 4 OHM power. But obviously not the round sound of strings or the roundness in a moment intense singing of a dramatic baritone. I was addressing $ limitations the person on the message board. I do not know what Rogue does now and do not mean to disparage their equipment . The 1.7's can deliver an amazing illusion of bass with high current solid state equipment that is inexpensive. Why pay 5X more for Krell? More sense to go the 3.7i way. Hope I am not too much a bore.
Which is why I put in the caveat of the subwoofer. 100 watter tube amps on a budget can't swing the deep bass of a planar, what there is of it.
If you want to play a medium planar full range on a tube amp then you start with a sea of tubes amp like a VTL Wotan or Siegfried.
