This is a rough sketch of my 20X17 ft living room that may better explain some component placement. The distance from the front wall to the front of the TV stand is approx. 4ft. The distance between the back of the big couch and the rear wall is around 2~3 ft. I'm seriously leaning towards going with a Sony VPL-HW40ES projector and probably a 120~134" diagonal motorized screen to be installed centered and on the top of the 16ft front wall so that I can utilize the wall to install some more of my wife's big pictures, you know sort of a happy wife, happy life kind of thing…lol. I'm also looking at positioning a pair of MMGs for the rear surrounds on either back side of the couch…between it and the rear wall. I would like to do 7.1 but need you guys opinion on whether or not my living room can support that. Plan as I see it was to position an MMG next to the fireplace and the other one directly opposite across the room. Sub placement? Hmmm…I figure one beside each main speaker or 1 in the front of the room, the other at the rear? Thoughts?

I'm leaning towards utilizing a projection system. The motorized screen I was looking at measures 65"X 115" (132" diagonal). My front wall measures approx 16ft across while the rear is around 11.5 ft. Both front/rear walls are around 8.5Ft high and i'm looking at placing a projector somewhere on the rear wall. This makes for an approximate 16ft throw distance between walls. Since this particular screen is 9.5ft wide, would performance/sound of either MG1.7i or 3.7i suffer if they were placed that far apart? Can anyone speak to this or tell me if the speakers would interfere with the projection? Should I set up projection first and test the projection then build the system around the projection? Suggestions? Most likely will roll with a set of 1.7is but 3.7is not necessarily out of the question.

You should not have a problem with the 3.7 on the sidewalls and I would doubt the 1.7 would have a problem either.
As to whether the Limage setup would work I would venture that it is more likely if your room were longer but still have a good chance of it working. If not then you will need to pull the speakers a bit further from the sidewalls and aim them at your listening area. They might be a bit obtrusive that way but they would work.
The main speaker placement will be about 3ft out from the front 16ft wall. Plan is to place the motorized screen in between the front speakers on the 16ft wall. So far it looks like the main speakers will be around 9.5ft apart. Is this too much? So when you say side wall, is that the wall your referring to? Surround speakers would consist of a pr of MMGs about half way between the front/rear wall, one next to fireplace, the other on the opposite side of the room. Finally, the rears along the back wall...either side of that couch. Thoughts?

Agree with Satie, the L'image setup could work. Whatever you do, plot out the sight lines from your listening area before you commit to the screen and speaker size. With that orientation and L'Image, I think 3.7's could fit and be a good choice.
I don't see why you couldn't do 7.1. Sides should be easy, again, you might want to use the on-walls which are very practical for home theater. Rears look like they'd be a bit asymmetrical, but you can let levels and timing on the prepro, or let Audyssey do it. Again, the on walls would work -- the practical advantage over the MMG's is that they don't have to be 3' out from the wall. I'm not sure how the sides would interact with the L'Image setup.
I'd try putting the sub behind the couch. That gives you more output/lower distortion, and apparently subs are minimum phase when they're near you, so you can equalize out room response irregularities -- something you can't do if subs are in the normal position. If you go with a conventional location, two subs will give you smoother bass than one. You'll have to experiment since the best position is room dependent. You can start in a front corner, which gives you maximum gain. Then move along the wall.
Your screen plan will prevent the speakers from being close to the screen since they will be too wide for the 10' wall. Speakers would end up in front of your doors on either side.or would be casting a shadow over your screen.
The solution is to place them on the sidewalls far into the room, about 8' measured from the doors on each side - in which case the 3.7 is likely the better choice since this is the size room it is ideal for. You will likely still want a subwoofer. This would make for a good "Limage" setup considering your seat is already in the proper position. You may want to extend the wall leading to the dining area by placing a tall bookcase on it.
