Thanks Sondek. This is most helpful to know.
Satie-
I've been able to listen extensively today and the little tube amp and preamp I have seem to work a charm. I listen to classical music 95% of the time and tonal balance and coherence re the qualities that I value most with reproductuion, so I will stick with tubes for these most likely.
Much appreciated.

Four Acoustat panels per side should mean these speakers are relatively efficient. You might want more than 12 watts but maybe not depending on how loud you listen. I run tubes with my Acoustats and tubes are nice. Have not tried solid state with them.
Not sure what Spectra tweeter tweak you are referring to, Spectra models use different panels and interfaces to simulate a thin high frequency line source rather than running all panels full range as in the 2+2 and Model 4s. To convert your speakers into Spectra 44 you would need to convert your panels to 5 wire Spectra panels and use the appropriate Spectra interface.
My Acoustat 2+2 sounded great with a KT120 Push Pull tube amp, but I slightly prefer my SS Class A amps on them. I currently have my ICEpower 1000ASP on them, and they drop out a bit when pushed (ICEPowers do NOT like Capacitive Loads like these ESLs). The Aleph 5 and Krell KSA-50 clones work better than the KT120 tube amp when pushing the 2+2.
In a pinch, you can try the Crown Drivecore XLS2000 (or XLS2500, but not XLS1000) - they are cheap and can really make them sing, albeit a bit harsh on HF, but the tube pre should help quite a bit. A great buy for $250 new on ebay. Pretty much same HF issues as the Brystons, but at 1/10 the price...
I VOID WARRANTIES
When I bought my 2_2s (used) I was told there was a buzzing from a panel at certain frequencies and volume. When I auditioned them (power source unknown)....I heard no problems. So I took them home.
I started out with an Adcom 555 II for power. Occasionally, I'd hear the panel(s) rattle (buzz) during high volumes.
I them moved on to my McIntosh MC275. There was certainly an improvement...less occurrences of panel rattle. But the amp definitely started to choke at higher volumes....along with some panel rattle.
Next...the Jadis Defy 7 two six-packs orf EL34, for 100 watts/ch). All sorts of headroom....never any rattles or buzzes for the past six years.

I have 2+2's as well with the medalions, Best SS amps I have run on them are Threshold, Krell KSA, ClassD Henry HO's H20-S250 icepower, Forget Bryston, very sterl amps.
