Kinda new at this.I'm replacing the capacitors. The mallory is 12mfd 50 v but the Elpac states 2.0+-20 % I assume 2.0 is mfd which I also understand is the same as uf. Any insight would be great.Any suggestions for caps would also be appreciated
thanks

I just soldered in the new caps .The tweeters work but not the bass. Not sure what I've done.Cant see a break in the bass wires.Any ideas would be great
What caps did you get?
I am using Clarity caps esa series.I actually have two sets of the mg-1 and recapped the first pair earlier with the same caps with good results
I am still having trouble getting the bass panel to work.I have changed the caps ,wires and hookups on both speakers One works great the other no bass .When I run a jumper wire from connection board where one side of the caps are hooked up to the other connection where the other side is hooked up I get Bass. With out the wire no bass.I'm thinking I might need to change the connection board or capacitor issue. This is the 2nd pair of mg-1 s Ive recapped I had no issues with the first pair.Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated

can you test al the segments in the entire wiring scheme to locate the disconnect or is it out of reacch? If out of reach then just disconnect the old wires and put in new wires and caps according to the schematic. Obviously your test is showing that the bass panel is functioning fine. In that test you bypassed just the cap(s) with a wire?
The bass drivers can be checked with an ohmmeter.....it should show about five ohms. If you don't have an ohmmeter just use a standard "D" cell battery and connect/disconnect for an audible indication.
If you can't see a break in the bass wires then there's a bad connection somewhere.
Both speakers doing the same thing??
Dave.
Haven't done the second speaker yet.I will borrow my sons meter and have a look.I will update when I can.Thanks.
I haven't worked on these for a month .Too much stuff going on till today.I put in a new connection board and I have the same issues. The other speaker works fine after the recap.Could it be possible that the caps I'm using in the trouble some speaker have issues from the factory?
I would determine the depth that would be good to mount the cap and then see if there is some combination that totals 13-14.5µF by putting them in parallel with is additive.
Partsconeexion had the Solen PB caps that are decent and you can buy much more expensive caps if you want. MUG Files show the schematic of the MG-I as a 13µF cap and you have 14 or there abouts so the exact number isn't important.
Measure, get what fits and adds up to what you need and let us know how it sounds.
No advice on a particular brand. Some comments: 1)The voltage rating is not too important as long as it is 50V or higher 2) exactly matching to 14 mfd is not needed so a 12 mfd + 2.2 mfd (sometimes easier to find) is okay as long as both speakers are the same, 3) different combinations such as (12 + 2) or (10 + 3.9) are ok as well. Finally your replacement caps may be considerably larger (physically) than stock so a neat fit may be a problem. My suggestion is to either do not look at the back of the speaker or close your eyes when you listen :).
You just reminded me of the 'idea' that caps should be near same value so they handle the HF the same and don't introduce 'problems'. (potential, I'd say)
To that end? Needing 14mfd? A PAIR of 6.8 would be close enough and if you MUST use a bypass? A pair of .22 would work.
Also on 2nd thought, I'd try for 5% if possible and within budget. 20%? Only if I could somehow 'match' them.
The combinations which add up to 14 are varied.
A pair of the 6.8 PX Clarity and the .47 will run about 16$ per speaker AND are 5% rated.
And while I generally don't specifically 'recommend' a part or component, I think these are a good value for intended use.
Too much is never enough
Madisound has the Clarity PX line. Budget priced but certainly better than 'stock'.
I HAD a pair of MG-1 and they were wonderful.
I think Magnepan eventually settled on SOLON caps for a number of years. They'd work, too.
Spending wacky amounts for stuff like 'Mundorf Cosmic Unobtanium in Oil' is not indicated for this speaker.
Replace caps in BOTH panels at once.
Too much is never enough
