SD, how do you like the tri-center setup? I was just talking with a dealer who wasn't very keen. He felt the MMC2s took away from the CCR.
Follow Ups:
I started with just the CCR to go with my 20.1s. There is no question in my mind that the tri-center is a big upgrade over just the CCR. In fairness to your dealer, part of this may be in how it gets set up. In my case I have the MMC2s flank my flat screen and have the CCR over the top, so that greatly lessens the lobing of frequency responses that might occur if all three were in line with each other.
The biggest differences I notice is with voices both in music and in movies. With just the CCR the voices seemed to come from a hole in the wall -- very focused but also very flat. With the tri-center (after some fine tuning in distance setups in my pre-amp) voices now seem to float in space in front of the rest of the sound image. This makes for much greater clarity in understanding voices in movies and it creates a very realistic sense of the soundstage where there is a soloist out front center-stage.

I totally agree. Our primary reference system at Widescreen Review is comprised of 2 20.7s, 2. 3.7s, 2.1.7s, the tri-Center system (CCR & 2 MMC-2s), two Bass Panels and 4 MMC-2 for height. There is nothing that sonically even approaches the clarity and spatial dimensionality of this system.

Wow, that has to be the ultimate Magnepan system!!! What size room are you using it in? I'm also curious how you configured the tri-center vis-a-vis the front screen. Thanks.
SD
The room is in the living room of a 2,700 square foot home. The living room has a vaulted ceiling. I will describe the system in a future issue of Widescreen Review. I should also mention that I use two Thiel S3 dual 12-inch subwoofers for the front heimisphere and one Bag End INFRA-18-inch subwoofer for the rear hemisphere.
Gary
Until then, some pictures would be nice, (recalling what's said re: pictures vs. words). 2,700 square feet might be necessary to accommodate just the amplifiers necessary to run it. BTW how many amplifiers and of what manufacture and which models do you use? If I were to flip on the many amplifiers required to drive all those speakers I'm pretty sure I would trip a fuse (in the basement).
I use two Classé CA5300 five-channel amplifiers and two Classé CA2300 two-channel amplifiers, all delivering 300 watts into 8 Ohms and 600 watts into 4 Ohms, and a ThetaDigital Casablanca 4A. I use a 20-amp circuit and an Equi-Tech Model Q balanced-power unit.
Gary
Are you using the Dirac digital room correction with that, and if so, how do you like it?
SD
Dirac digital room correction works fantastically!
Gary
Thanks, that's helpful. Before I go with a ccr, I think I'm going to use my cc3 and mc1s to see how I like the try. Wendell doesn't recommend the cc3 for the tri, but I have it so I can try with and without. Additionally, several folks on here just use the Minnie Maggies as dual center so I can try that as well.
Have you considered a mult-channel amp? I use a Rotel to power my tri amped Frankenpan tweeters and my MGCC-1 center speaker. it might solve any future additions for amplification as for example, the Rotel is a seven channel amp. Just a thought.
