I just finished listening to Glen Gould' playing the Goldberg variations. (1982 version). I was totally mesmerized. The 3.7i were replaced by a concert grand - incredible. I had to wonder if the recording studio was the same dimensions as my listening room. It has been generally held that the two Gould recordings are the definitive performances. He is totally immersed in the music and his utterings throughout only add to the emotion and musicality of Bach's little creation. The music, the performance, the recording and these 3.7i are pure heaven.

Are you using LP's as your source? I have always wondered what the best source is for playback, providing one has a good turntable, CD player, etc. and lossless recordings to play. What would your preference be if all things were equal?
The Gould recording is a CD but in general I prefer vinyl. Using a Denon DP55K with a Magnepan Unitrac I arm and a Dynavector 17DMk2 cartridge (which is getting a little long in the tooth). CD player is a Heart 6000. I also have been listening to flac files using a Schitt Loki DAC (converting the files on the fly to DSD using JRiver Media Center 20).
Quite honestly all three (CD, vinyl, flac) can give outstanding results. My preference for vinyl probably is a bit biased as this is what I grew up on but it also seems to me that better recordings are available on vinyl than on CD's, which is a reflection of the efforts of the recording engineer more than the medium itself.
Love both the stereo and mono recordings...Oddly. the quality of the recordings(sound wise) vary with many Gould Bach recordings. The remastering digitalization - did not do much on some of the analogue performances. The 1.7's do a commendable job also and the bottom octaves sound firm and true..
Now you have attained 'Nirvana' ... perhaps you need to put this album on? ;-))

I am glad that his mutterings do that for you. I simply cannot get into his recordings for that reason. Keith Jarret is another one I can't get into. I know they are both prodigious talents but I find the low level moaning off putting.
I am not the greatest fan of Gould's interpretations of Bach, but my main problem is the elaborate micro fixes all over the recordings where Gould changed the volume on particular notes and the engineer did not try to fix the changes in tape hiss levels as Gould edited his performance at the console.
I don't really mind Gould's mutterings, Arrau's heavy breathing not Schnabel's hum alongs. I don't even mind Heifetz' prancing around the soundstage.
Are still stock? Have you bypassed the fuse yet?
Thanks
Mark
Still stock. I haven't had time to start mods although I did put an RC network across the input.
