Can you expand on "other alternatives are becoming more and more available". I have a pair of Duettas that still work. The 'Graz' rebuild option is not a good value for me and he won't sell some parts direct.
Follow Ups:
The Analysis Audio speakers have been available for a while. Now the Clarisys Audio speakers which seem closely aligned with the Duetta Signature. There are other, similar approaches and of course there's always Magnepan. :)
Yes, the current rebuild/refurbish option from Graz is out of $$$ range for most owners. It was a business model that never had a chance long term and I think he's finally realizing that. However, he's intimated to me recently that he may back off his rigid non-DIY stance and expand his offerings. He was very coy though and wouldn't tell me any details. Stay tuned on that.
All Apogee's have (or will have) foam deterioration issues. You may not hear it with music material most of the time, but it's there. Slowly sweeping tones through the range of the woofer will make the issue audibly obvious.
As I said, the Apogee market is interesting. :)
Dave.
Thanks for the info. I apparently flunked the Graz 'handy' test. My current alternative is 1.7 + DWMs. My Duetta woofers do make fuzzy noises at some low frequencies. I fixed a broken tweeter by shortening the ribbon and noticed the woofer foam dust when I took the sock off.
Nearly everyone flunks Graz' "handy" test. You're in good company. :)
If you noticed foam dust then your woofer edge damping foam is certainly deteriorated quite a bit. It's inevitable with the Apogee's and the process is sped up depending upon environmental conditions....temperature/humidity/etc.
The silicone repair procedure is viable, but a decent amount of the existing foam damping should be intact to give the silicone a "key" to adhere and coagulate with. It can be an arduous process too.
No easy solutions to Apogee issues I'm afraid.
Dave.
