Return to Planar Speaker Asylum
219.74.106.47
My tweeter section on one of my 0.5 QR went dead sometime ago. Local agent here in Singapore told me it's not possible to replace the quasi ribbons. Ive seen youtube videos of replacements of ribbons on those old Mags but i can't find any videos on QR models.
Has any one ever replaced quasi ribbons on QR Maggies?

You don't really give us much to go on. What else did this "agent" say? It could be anything in the electrical path to, or in, the tweeter. He is correct, technically it can't be replaced. At least not in the sense that you would think of replacing, say a dome tweeter. The 0.5QR is all one driver ... all one sheet of mylar ... was listening to mine last night.
The mod to upgrade them to 0.6QR model specs, by the way, is to take 40Ft of wire out of the inductor.
Good luck
I just realised I've just asked you about your repairs on your 0.5QR on another thread.
Care to share how you did you repairs?
Your sharing would be of great to me cos I've seen my videos but none on the QRs.
Thks for the reply.
I've forgotten what the agent said. The sense of lost hope was what I got back from the meetup with him.
Think it could be more electrical. The tweeters were sounding fine, before the last time I tried to play and found it was silent.
I've swapped the fuses and it made no differences, so the problem is on the speaker itself.
I've tried searching for the schematics of the 0.5QR to no avail.
Any further advise?
Here two links to pictures of my Tympani IVa mids, modified with foil conductors. It is possible to do this. 3M 77 and 3M 30NF is what it takes. Old wires/foils removed with aceton.

You can buy foil & glue from Magnepan.
I would attempt to repair the QR tweeter rather than replacing the foil. You can use a simple ohm meter to locate the break in the foil (assuming that is the problem) and repair the break with conductive foil and conductive epoxy. As I recall the .5QR has multiple layers of fabric. I do not know if you could reuse the fabric after removing it.
