I've tried it. It works fine and efficiency is improved a bit. However, placing them side by side makes the imaging go to hell. I tried all sorts of layouts. Ended up getting 1.6's :)

Yeah, that makes sense, side-by-side wouldn't work well at all. An already complicated horizontal polar response would be come even more so.
Regarding vertical stacking....it would be best to turn the second right speaker upside down and place it on top of the main left speaker, and vice-versa. That achieves a closer coupling of the transducers.

Yes, moving up the model line is a better idea.
